Heart Warming

Just about every part of me is ready for winter to wrap up and for spring to come — except for my appetite! Yes, spring veggies are bright and delicious, but I'm just not ready to say goodbye to hearty soups, stews and casseroles. So I've made it my goal to make a rich and comforting cassoulet (which is a French slow-cooked stew) over the weekend. So many recipes call for expensive, hard-to-find meats, so I've chosen this simple wine, bean, sausage and ham cassoulet, which I think will be the perfect medley of salty ham, velvety beans, rich wine and herbs. Fingers crossed!

I think that often times, we dream so big, we forget that simple things around us can be just as spectacular as the over-the-top images we conjure up in our imaginations. Hangers, for instance. Who would have thought that something as mundane and everyday could be so gorgeous, if only chosen with the same amount of care as say, the lovely blouse you chose to wear to work today? But seeing is believing, and we're hoping to apply this way of thinking to other quotidian items we see on a regular basis. But we're starting here, with these Jeanne d' Arc Decor coat hangers. Circus Circus

Ever since I was a kid, I've been so fascinated by the circus. I couldn't ride elephants or fly through the air on a trapeze, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I donned a ringleader hat and tried training my childhood cat to jump through a hula hoop! She never really got the idea, but I'm pretty sure that if I'd tried oh, a couple hundred more times, she might have finally succeeded. Guess I'll never know... Anyway, I was tickled pink when I came across this wonderful circus tent, and I couldn't resist posting a few more circus-inspired photos to go along with it. After all, isn't it come one, come all?!

I really thought that the 70s-chic look of 2011 would be a come-and-go trend, but it seems to be popping up all over the spring runways yet again — and I'm not so sure how I feel about it! On the one hand, it reminds me of my teenage years when I'd wear my hair straight and long with large sunglasses, a turtleneck and bell bottoms. A Glimmer Of Hope

2011 has been a wonderful year in its own way, but I for one can't wait to begin 2012. I have so many ideas brewing for French Charmed, and I just have a feeling that this year is going to be spectacular all around! I usually end up making seemingly impossible resolutions (finally get organized! learn how to swim! become a world-famous jazz singer!), but this year, I think I'll keep it simple: I'm going to try and recognize a beautiful moment about each and every day, no matter how small and simple that moment might be. I truly do believe that if we live in the present, enjoy the blessings that are right in front of us and be thankful for what we already have, we will be happier people all around. So that's what I plan to do! What are some of your New Year resolutions? I hope one of them is to swing by and see some of the gorgeous new products we have in the French Charmed boutique! Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice

In my house, we usually serve a salty breakfast on Christmas morning to counterbalance all the sweets we get in our stockings. But there's something so special about holiday morning pain perdu (aka French toast), so I try and serve it on Christmas Eve morning, especially if I have guests in the house. My favorites are French toast with figs and mascarpone cream (so sophisticated!) and French toast with almonds and strawberries (crunchy and oh-so-sweet). But there a million different recipes to try. Here are some that sound intriguing to me:

Snips, Snails and Puppy Dog Tails

Okay, I wouldn't really suggest you serve puppy dog tails. But a lot of people equate escargot with being just as yucky as the popular children's saying, believing that the scrumptious little snails are icky slimy buggers pulled out of garden soil. But trust me when I say that the delicious delicacies are no more or less "disgusting" than eating a lobster, shrimp or crab from its shell. And they taste just as yummy! They may be difficult to find, but if you can track them down — either fresh or in a can — we suggest this fabulous escargots a la bourguignonne recipe from Emeril Lagasse. Très chic.

I really do miss my daughters the most this time of year. Though I have to confess that it probably has less to do with the fact that it's a family holiday and more to do with the fact that I'm missing my two gift wrappers! We could get those presents beautifully wrapped in the blink of an eye when all three of us sat down to do it, whereas these days, it's an all-month solo event for myself. Good thing I love presenting gorgeous presents, or I'd have to rope the girls into moving home! If I know what holiday is (and believe me, I do), it's definitely this sweet, luscious cup of silky red velvet cake hot cocoa. I've been sipping down cups of The Coffee Bean's version like, well, they're cups of perfection. Which they are! But this homemade version made with cream cheese whipped cream is also unbelievably decadent, and it's an impressive seasonal treat to serve to family and friends.

If you're anything like us, you're always looking for ways to outdo the special touches you impressed upon the holidays previous years before. Using a rare and sought after ribbon here, spending the time to make homemade truffles there, the list goes on and on. This year, I thought of yet another way to bring more magic to the season: Having my holiday card envelopes addressed by a calligrapher! It's much more expensive than the good old fashioned DIY approach, but it's something special for those who won't be receiving gifts along with their cards this year, and that definitely makes it worth it. However, I applaud any brave souls who attempt to self-address their cards in a fancy way this year! Why not, for a little added whimsy and fun?

Okay, I'll admit it: I have an addiction to glitter. Namely, gold glitter. I'll use it, look at it, sprinkle it, probably maybe even eat it, just to have it in my life. The man? Vintage Viands

I've been on the vintage bandwagon concerning clothes and shoes it seems since even before my own mom was born, but my latest obsession with the old-fashioned comes in the form of my favorite domestic activity: cooking! I've been trying recipes straight from places like 1861's The Book of Household Management and Martha Washington's "Booke of Cookery," and I confess: Though a term like "a spoonfull of sack" doesn't translate to the modern kitchen, I sure get a kick out giving it my own interpretation and winging it when I have no idea what I'm doing! It truly adds to the fun, and using these antique recipes reminds me that cooking isn't a chore, but rather a long-standing tradition that women have typically enjoyed and excelled in. If you're brave enough to traverse the unknown like the English settlers did in the 1700s, I dare you to try a few vintage recipes yourself! Here's an easy one to get you started, from 1887's "The American Girls Handy Book: How to amuse yourself and others."

Molasses-Candy

2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup of New Orleans molasses
2/3 cup of vinegar & water mixed
A piece of butter half the size of an egg.

When the candy hardens in cold water, pour into shallow buttered tins, and as soon as it is cool enough to handle, pull it until it is of a straw-color. Splendid!

"What in the world are they making? What but molasses candy! It is nearly done. It ought to be, after the boiling and the stirring that the girls in turn have given it. Finally, some one holds forward a pan of cold water. Dorothy, carefully dipping out a spoonful of the fragrant syrup, drops it into the water. It fizzes; it stiffens – hurrah! The candy is ready to be taken from the fire. Cool enough now… They are pulling the candy already. Boys and girls in pairs, with hands daintily washed and greased, are taking soft lumps of the cooling mass, drawing them out into great, long, shining ribbons, doubling and drawing them out again until they get lighter and lighter in color, and finally the beautiful golden strands are declared ready for more artistic handling."

I'm sure you're all still stuffed from Thanksgiving and don't even want to think about more food, but I just couldn't help myself when it came to posting a blog about Christmas tablescapes! I spent my Thanksgiving at my daughter's, and since she didn't have a table for the giant feast, I'm in holiday table mode! I just love these French country looks. Simple, yet stunning. They make me want Christmas to be here right now! (Don't tell that to my wallet, as its still recovering from the L.A. trip and needs some time to refill so I can get those Christmas presents bought and wrapped!)

I really got it lucky this year, as I don't have to lift a finger at all for Thanksgiving! My eldest daughter offered to host the feast at her apartment in Los Angeles, and she's quite the little chef, so I'm looking forward to what deliciousness she'll have to offer. Unfortunately, she lives in a studio apartment without a table and chairs, so we'll have to balance turkey, stuffing, potatoes and pie on our laps while perched on her couch. But considering she'll be doing all the planning, cooking and cleaning (and it's all taking place in the beautiful Southern California sunshine with plenty of champagne to go around), I don't think I'll be complaining!

Out Of The Blue

Oysters don't generally scream "holiday time" in my house, but I know they're quite popular on the East coast when it comes to stuffings and side dishes for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. And believe it or not, oysters are a very traditional addition to holiday feasts in France! It's a little outside of the box for my family, but I think I'll give this herbed oyster stuffing recipe a whirl for myself this week and see if all the hype is worth it. I do love slurping cool, briny oysters from their shell, and I'm thinking the addition of crusty French bread, herbs and veggies can only heighten the appeal!

Due to it being strictly an American and Canadian holiday celebrating the bountiful harvest of fall, Thanksgiving isn't celebrated in France (I'm crossing my fingers that this isn't shocking news to any of you!). However, just because it's not a typical French holiday doesn't mean we can't bring a little inspiration from the country into our family dinner, right? I tend to incorporate a little something special into my affair, whether it be a French martini in place of wine or a galette in place of a pie. But if you're set on following American traditions when it comes to your feast, how about calling each element by its French name? Here are a few words, just to get you started. Good luck!

One Fine Day

I know it's time to start focusing on the holidays (and I am dears! In fact, I just started working on the December newsletter while sipping spiced hot cider, yum! ), but a part of me is still a bit sad to say goodbye to cafe weather. I'm always so torn during transitional months. On the one hand, I'm excited for the season that lies ahead. But on the other, I know it's going to be a very long year until I can again enjoy the one that is passing! I just had brunch with a friend over the weekend, and we tried sitting out on the patio, but the heating lamps just weren't enough to suffice, and we rushed inside before our aperitifs hit the table. Oh well — we tried, and that's what counts! Formal farewell, cafe weather. Until we meet again next year...

Perfect Pie

When I was growing up, I remember being so excited when my mom would bake frozen Swanson pot pies. The creamy vegetable and meat filling was the perfect hearty meal, but the flaky and sweet pie crust almost made it double as a dessert. My taste buds have definitely grown up since then, and I prefer a more sophisticated pot pie (my favorite is one at a little French restaurant inside the Denver airport; it’s made with a variety of fall vegetables and Pernod, yum!). But even though I love the traditional flaky crust usually associated with the hearty pies, I recently stumbled across this impressive recipe made with a homemade potato bowl, and I can’t wait to give it a try!

To the celebration in Chalindrey, France, you must; hurry, hurry, my friends, before all will be dust! (Or, in other words, you must check out France's annual witch festival in Chalindrey, the site of a historic 16th century witch hunt. The celebration seeks to evoke Halloween's Celtic roots, and in addition to scaring you witless, there's a haunting Celtic dance performed every Saturday night through the entire month of October!)

Paris, New York and Milan are the epicenters of fashion, but after seeing the debut collection from Russian photographer-turned-designer, Ulyana Sergeenko, we're thinking a trip to the North is in order! Her retro-fairytale fall/winter 2011 collection not only made our jaws drop, it had us rushing to the mirror with bobby pins and red lipstick. We've seen some pretty stellar takes on the 1950s housewife look as well as the fairytale princess look, but this mix of both with a modern edge by far blows anything else we've seen out of the water. Or ice, if we're thinking in Russian terms.

Is it just us, or is fall the best thing that ever happened to the planet? The trees look so beautiful, pumpkin lattes hit the streets, fashion is at its best and cooking sounds much less like a chore and much more like the most comforting, fun activity to ever have been invented. I'm a sucker for any recipe featuring pumpkins, sweet potatoes, butternut squash and savory meats like roast and pork chops. In fact, my daughters swear because of that, fall is the second time of the year I put on my bi-annual extra 15 pounds (the first being when Sheri's Restaurant features their yummy strawberry pies!). But in all my revelry for fall, I've never tried tackling one of the most basic, popular French comfort foods: boeuf bourguignon. There has been a lot of buzz about Vogue Italy’s September cover featuring a goth model wearing a nose ring and a (too-tiny?) corset. Did the magazine go too far? Or did it perfectly capture the feeling of avant-garde, which is what the month’s issue is all about? Personally, I love the slightly sexy, slightly morbid look they chose to splash all over the streets of Europe. But then again, I’ve always had a thing for strangely sexy things. Though I really can’t imagine how torturous it must have been for Victorian women, who were strapped uncomfortably tight into corsets on a daily basis. The look was lovely, but the reality? Horrendous!

No doubt you've already been out shopping fall's latest looks, but don't forget to update your makeup routine to go along with all your fab new finds! Perusing the runway had us noticing two major trends: bold eye brows and bold lips. And if done right, they're two bold looks that are easy to achieve!

Brows:

The first step to full brows is to stop over-tweezing! General maintenance is key, but the skinny thin brow look is definitely out. Next, fill in your arches with a matching eyebrow pencil. We recommend Laura Mercier's eyebrow pencil; it comes in five different colors to ensure you get the right match.

Lips:

Luscious lips don't have to be difficult. And berries and reds are absolutely foolproof for fall. If you can get away with it, skip the liner, which only ages you. And choose a bright color that is sure to get you noticed, but also matches your skin tone. We've found that Mac Red is a good fit for most. Or you can try the color in the lead photo, which is Rouge G de Guerlain in Garconne #25 (not yet available). And if it's your first time rocking red? Yes, you will feel like a clown. But wear it anyway; trust us, every woman feels that way when first donning the bold shade. But you will quickly start feeling comfortable and look stunning in the process!

I just found out that I missed a local cherry picking festival (drats!), so I just had to make a post about the delightful, juicy little fruits. I know I couldn't possibly be the only one who beams with exceptional happiness every time I have a bowl of cherries — could I? Oh wait, I just remembered that saying, "Life is just a bowl of cherries." I don't know what it is about those tart little guys, but they're what summer grins are made of!

I’m not usually one to bounce up and down in excitement and impatiently await the arrival of much of anything in an obvious way, but for some reason, the premiere of Terrence Malick’s film, Tree of Life, had me at a near heart-attack level of anticipation for months. His films are just absolutely stunning — I’d say they’re like cinema poetry — and this one (watch trailer here) has already won the Palme d’Or award at Cannes (which is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes film festival). Plus, it stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. What’s not to love?! However, I will warn that Malick’s films aren’t for the faint of heart: they’re usually hours long epics that often don’t follow an obvious plot line (again, cinematic poetry). But if you can remind yourself that it’s art and muster through it, I promise you’ll walk away in awe and appreciate life and nature as you’ve never done before.

When I think of men and I think of France, the word "dad" doesn't usually come to mind — except when June rolls around, when I try my darndest to get my father as enthusiastic about the small country as I am via a well-chosen French-themed gift. I've done the tie made by a French designer, French beers and even a gift certificate to a local fast food restaurant that's famous for their French fries (yes, that last one was a stretch, but hey, I'll try anything to get him excited about my obsession!). I generally am a little bit snobbish when it comes to champagnes and sparkling wine (I can't help myself, it's just in my nature), so it's always surprising to me when I find an affordable bottle that seems to be loved by all. And I did just that when I served Mumm Napa's Brut Rose for a family birthday this past weekend. Monday, May 23 is Victoria Day in Canada. This celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday (May 24th). Canada is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, of which the Queen is head.

Victoria Day is always on a Monday, and thus the holiday is part of a long weekend, which is commonly referred to as the Victoria Day Weekend, the May Long Weekend, the May Long, or the May Two-Four (a case of beer there is called a "two-four" and many of these are consumed over the holiday).

The Victoria Day Weekend is the first popular weekend for spring / summer travel. Lots of people open up their cottages, plant gardens, or just get away. Gorgeous fireworks displays are common, especially on Monday night. If you are lucky enough to join in the festivities, expect crowds at resorts and hotels and very busy highways.

Banks, schools, many stores and restaurants are closed on the Monday, so be sure to call ahead to find out about attractions and tourist spots that you plan to visit. Happy "two - four" Canadian friends!

Happy Mother’s Day!

There’s really nothing in this world that compares to mom. Even designer shoes (God love ‘em) can’t console you the same way after a tough day, make you feel better when you’re sick and listen to you go on and on about how, despite how much you try, you just can’t get your husband to pick his dirty laundry up off the floor. But probably the best thing about moms is the invaluable advice they pass on to you, with the hopes that maybe, just maybe, you’ll end up with a better life than they did. In celebration of this wonderful motherly trait, I’ve put together a list of five important lessons my own mother taught me. And what’s more, my daughters put together lists of five things I somehow managed to pass on to them (can’t wait to read that, haha). We’d also love to hear important lessons your mother had to give you, so please leave a comment in the box below. In the meantime, here’s wishing you a relaxing, fun filled Mother’s Day! May you be one of the lucky mamas whose children plan something special.

Five Lessons I Learned From My Mom
1. By giving me chores at a very early age, she instilled a great work ethic, which in turn provides me a great appreciation of the material things I've earned!

2. Cry if you must, but then pull up your boot straps, line up your ducks, and carry on!

3. Always look out for yourself. Have a stash of secret cash ... just in case!

4. Always rinse your dishes (yes, straight from the cupboard to the sink) as you never know what creepy crawlies visited in the night!

5. As old age sets in, be kind to your children and forget their past transgressions, as you may have to live with one of them!

Five Lessons My Eldest Daughter, Kambra, Learned From Me (In Her Own Words)
1. Boys are gonna hurt ya, that’s just the name of the game. Probably better to beat them to the punch!

2. Severely limit your intake of sweets, junk food and soda, because if you don’t watch your figure, nobody else will!

3. Try to be as self-sufficient as you can, and remember to treat yourself (whether that’s with wine, a new outfit or a whole new apartment) whenever you can.

4. No matter how bad things get, take a small moment to cry about it, a bigger moment to laugh it off, and a gigantic moment to forge ahead into the next adventure!

5. When answering the phone, it’s “hello” not “hullo.”

Five Lessons My Youngest Daughter, BreAnna, Learned From Me (In Her Own Words)
1. Seeing my mom cut up a credit card while I was young scarred me for life. So I’m very careful about my finances!

2. Experiencing culture is important, even if it’s just burnt garlic bread.

3. Be yourself, whether accepted by your mom or anyone else. She didn’t care what we wore to school, because, as she used to say, “I’m not the one who has to go out of the house looking like that!”

4. Keep your toilet so clean, you could eat off it!

5. She always said, “Do as I say, not as do.” I used to think that was ridiculous. She was a role model, for crying out loud! But now that I’ve reached my 20s, I realize she said it for a reason: She didn’t want us to make the same mistakes she did. And everyone is human, so of course, she made a few.

May brings flowers, but it also signifies the month of mothers, with this year’s big day falling this Sunday! I’ve been thinking about what to get my mother for months, as she’s not exactly the easiest person to shop for (allergic to perfume, picky about clothes, doesn’t do bubble bath, allergic to flowers, etc). Tiny Dancer

Is it just me, or does nothing make a girl feel prettier than slipping into a flowy spring dress and showing off the sexy nape of her neck with a messy yet très chic chignon? It’s a style that looks and feels so effortless, and at the same time, whispers elegance. Like a ballet dancer. I seriously can’t get enough! But it’s an art to perfect that undone look, and it has taken me years to get it just right. Luckily, I’ve finally figured it out — and I’m going to share my secrets with you! Start with clean, dry and smooth hair (use a straightener and a little anti-frizz serum if you have natural waves or curls). Then, tease the top a tiny bit for volume and an “undone” look. Pull hair back into a low ponytail that you twist and turn into a messy bun. Use bobby pins to fix any loose pieces (though don’t make it too tight and formal), and then pull a few strands out in the front to give it that sexy, just-woke-up look. And voila: You’ve got a ballerina-like do that will surely win you more than a few admiring glances!

Spiffy In A Jiffy!

Is it at all possible to feel glamorous — or even just microscopically unscum-like — while attempting to scrub and clean your home? Just the thought of all those chemicals and all that bending and sweating makes us feel hideously unattractive and a million miles away from anything resembling a carefree and refreshing lifestyle. But as luck would have it, the powers that be have heard our plight, and there are now several different cleaning brands and supplies that make scrubbing a much prettier and happier job! Our favorite is this line from Restoration Hardware. So classy and simple. And what’s more, we’ve got tips to help you get your place spiffy in a jiffy this April! Read on for the best way to tackle your annual springtime job:

1. Do your cleaning room by room, completely finishing an entire area before moving on to the next. You’ll feel much less scattered and get a nice sense of accomplishment as you tidy up and finish each room.

2. Don’t feel the need to finish your entire house in one day, or you’ll get overwhelmed and may not even decide to start in the first place! Our rule of thumb is to crack open a bottle of cool, refreshing white wine and clean/drink until the bottle is done. The rest can wait for another day!

3. Work from top to bottom in every room. This will help ensure you remember every nook and cranny, including ceiling fans, air vents, curtains, windows and baseboards.

4. Organize as you clean by making a pile of cast-offs that you can donate or give to friends later. When in doubt about whether or not you need something, remember rule number 27 in our "51 Ways To Feel French Right Now" newsletter bonus: When it comes to home furnishings and clothes in your closet, quality comes before quantity. Invest in and love a few perfect things, not several okay things (because really, who has room in a tiny Parisian flat for things not absolutely loved?!).

5. And last but not least, and this is absolutely essential, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done, light a few candles, sit back and relax in your fresh, stunningly clean home!

Nothing says spring like asparagus, and nothing says France like cheese. Let them rendezvous together in a bed of pastry, and you've got yourself one amazing dish! Well loves, April is usually a rainy month in Paris. But rub a dub, dub: The only water recently has been in the tub! Surprising as it is, it's been pretty sunny over in the City of Love, and according to weather.com, the brightness will continue for at least the next week or so and possibly beyond! So we say put away those rain boots we suggested last time around and break out some sunny kicks in the traditional drizzly-day yellow hue, instead! oxox

April Showers...

...bring May flowers. But a girl's gotta get through the showers, first! With the average rainfall in Paris being about 1.78 inches in April, proper rain gear is a must. But there's no sense in splashing through the puddles looking dreary, dears. There is such thing as looking stylish, even while wet! oxox

Burberry is always perennially chic, and this waterproof black twill jacket will especially stand the test of time.

As anyone who's been recently wandering the cities of France will tell you, the street markets are bursting with fava beans. Not only are these buttery little nuggets of goodness a spring staple in the country, they're also packed with iron, fiber and vitamins A and C. So make like the French and try your hand at a fava bean recipe! Here are a few links to some that made our mouths water.
